미국의 빌보드차트로 대변되는 서양의 주류 팝시장에서 라틴색을 띈 가수들은 대를 잇듯 존재한다. 1990년대에는 마이애미 사운드머신 (Miami Sound Machine)의 글로리아 에스테판이 독보적이었다면 그 이후로 리키 마틴, 제니퍼 로페즈 등이 활약을 했었고, 최근에는 샤키라의 활약이 두드러진다.

샤키라가 가진 이전 라틴팝 가수들과의 차별점이라고 한다면 라틴 리듬을 적극적으로 활용하면서도 정석적인(?) 팝/락을 동시에 보여주고 있다는 점이다. 즉, 기본 2가지 모습을 함께 보여주고 있는 셈이랄까?

이 곡을 보면서 (들으면서) 뜬금없고 두서없는 생각이 들었다.

개인적으로 사실 우리나라 가요가 미국 팝의 영향력 아래 있다고 생각한다. 따라서, 시대적인 유행이 미국이나 영국 등 대중음악 시장이 활발하게 움직이는 곳에서 우리나라로 흘러들어오곤 한다. 예전부터 지금까지 그건 꾸준한 사실이라 생각한다.
하지만, 소비자들은 해당 장르의 오리지날리티와는 상관없이 자신이 듣기 좋은 음악을 들으면 된다. (솔직히 요즘 시대에 그런 걸 따지는 것도 좀 무의미하기도 하고.) 에미넴이어도 조피디어도 상관없고, 브리트니 스피어스여도 이효리여도 상관없다. 원조이든 원조가 아니든, 리메이크든 샘플링이든 음악 자체가 좋으면 그저 들어주면 되니까.
그녀의 독창적인 춤동작을 보며 떠오른 뜬금없는 생각이란 이런 거였다. 우리나라에서 샤키라를 대체할 만한 인물이 누가 있을까? 대체할만한 사람이 마땅히 떠오르지 않았다. 즉, 우리나라 가수 (한국말로 부르며 한국에서 활동하는 가수) 로 대체하기가 어려운 가수구나. (물론 이런 예는 샤키라 말고도 많지만.)
그러다 문득 샤키라가 팝락으로 된 곡들을 부르지 않았다면 백지영이 제일 적당하겠다 싶은 생각은 들었다. 새삼스레, 최근에 역경을 딛고 다시 일어선 백지영에게 박수를!
그리고, 어쨌거나 샤키라와 와이클리프 장의 합체는 성공적인 듯. 최근 힙합에 자주 쓰이는 멜로디를 관악기로 깔고 그 위에 라틴 리듬을 올린 편곡은 와이클리프 장의 센스? 샤키라의 춤은 참 독특한 매력이 있다. 엄밀히 따지자면 샤키라 본인의 매력.

참고 그녀의 본명은 샤키라 이사벨 메버락 립폴 (Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll). 1977년 콜럼비아 출생. 13살때 집에서 나와 14살 때 데뷔앨범 "Magia" (1991)을 발표하며 활동을 시작했다. 작곡,작사,편곡을 모두 직접 하며, 1995년에 "Pies Descalzos"를 발표하면서 스타덤에 오른다.
